these guys are fucking amazing. this is probably my favorite this day forward release. i'm not even sure quite how to describe it. if you like most of the recent east coast melodic hardcore stuff, then you'd probably like this. nobody i can really compare them to though.
i liked the art of drowning for the most part, and it seems like all of the other reviews on here said it was sort of in the same vein, so i decided to give it a shot. i wish i hadn't. this is just a tad too cheese for me.
The songs on this cd are very disjointed. The parts just don't flow together well. By themselves these parts are all very good though. The singing vocals (done by the drummer I believe) are fucking awful. He just can't seem to find the right key at all. The one where he does all the vocals (I think 'Chloroform Perfume') is by far the worst song on this cd. The best are probably 'Take Her To The Music Store' and 'The Switch' (though there is one scream in the beginning of 'the switch' that is just fucking silly). For the most part the screaming is alright, but I'd say if they had someone else do the singing parts and worked on the whole 'transition' part of song writing, I know they could do a lot better. I just don't find this cd enjoyable. Good parts but they don't fit.
The Hope Conspiracy is probably my favorite hardcore band out there. If you liked "COLD BLUE" at all, you need to buy this one too. I bought the 7 inch version, though I also own the other 7 inch that has the rest of the songs that are on this CD version. They are all great songs, but the two new ones that are on the 7 inch are some of the most mellodic stuff this band has done yet. The first one is an original and then they do Naked Raygun's "TREASON". The 7 inch has the two songs on the first side, and the other side has a really fucking cool drawing engraved in it. It looks hand carved with a pocket knife, though theyed have to charge a lot more for these if they did it that way. This record is worth it for that engraving alone. You'd really be missing out if you only stared at the engraving and never listened to it though. Just buy this.
