Mates Of State

Our Constant Concern

Polyvinyl 46

Released on January 22, 2002

Currently trying to achieve the title of "band that pays most rent on empty apartment while on tour", Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel (a.k.a. MATES OF STATE) have scored some serious points by doing all of the following in the last six months: quitting jobs as teacher and cancer researcher (respectively) to pursue band full time, getting married, self-releasing new 7", recording new record with Dave Trumfio in L.A., signing to Polyvinyl, and going on three successive full national tours (with BEULAH, THE ANNIVERSARY, and SUPERDRAG) in which they've won over hundreds of kids nightly and sold thousands (for real) of copies of their nearly cult-status first record My Solo Project. With no end in sight, the San Francisco band is set to release their follow-up this January, a record that even exceeds the promise of My Solo Project... With Dave Trumfio (Kingsize Studios, THE PULSARS, WILCO) engineering, MATES were able to capture their unique drums/organ/vocals sound and pull off the "make two people sound like four" trick with ease. Our Constant Concern is a record that's sure keep the van rolling and the apartment empty.

I actually didn't much care for this album. It's good and all, but compared to Mates of State's other 2 full doesn't even compare. If you enjoyed Team Boo or My Solo Project you'll probably want to pick this up anyway. But this cd is certainly lacking in the dancy/crazy category, so beware. Oh, and for anyone unfamiliar with the band...uhhhhh...well the best way to describe it is male/female harmonized vocals with drums and an organ(which is much faster and complex on the other 2 releases). But at least they're still cute ... awwwwww.

Mates of state is a guy on drums and a girl on synthesizer both doing vocals. Its unique; and good. If your into that kind of thing. If your a big fan of say, Until The End or Bad Luck 13 then your probably not gonna dig this. Its very emotional. But if you like really weird music (like myself) then you'll get this. If you have the other MOS album and your wondering if this one is as good, well yes it is. So buy it. Unless your out of money; then youre screwed.

I bought this cd a while ago and it took me a long time to really get into it, the reason is because it is so unique and such a great combination of music. with male and female vocals, drums and keyboards, acordians at some point along with trumpet, it is a great cd. anyone who is looking for something extremely original and beautifly played should by this cd.

In their first release with Polyvinyl this duo really has a sound that is so full you get part way through the album before you realize that it is only two people. Kori and Jason have done a great job following up My Solo Project (on Omnibus records). They way the two of them harmonize in a way reminds me of Pinback.

If you ever have the chance be sure to check them out live.
