A hard rock ensemble disguised as ska-punks, Long Island, NY-based quartet Sprout excels on "Small Kids Big Guns" via infectious, hook-laden pop songs and spirited performances evocative of Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls, Blink 182, and the Living End. Guitar-driven and decidedly up-tempo, Sprout's energetic veneer centers on lead vocalist Jay Tea. Spitting out lyrics about fascists, as in "The Want Machine," crooning over love in peril on "Without a Second Thought," or shoegazing in "Deny Myself Me". "Small Kids, Big Guns" affords wit, passion, and intelligence to a genre often trapped in a teenage wasteland.
