Saturday Looks Good To Me

All Our Summer Songs

(Fred From His Name Is Alive, Flashpaper, Lovesick)

Polyvinyl 60

Released on March 18, 2003

SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME is a Detroit pop band in every sense of the words. Led by songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Fred Thomas, (once or present member of HIS NAME IS ALIVE, FLASHPAPR, LOVESICK, etc..). SLGTM's songs bring to mind the lo-fi yet jam-packed production styles of Phil Spector, Joe Meek, and Motown's Berry Gordy, the dense arrangements of Brian Wilson, LEFT BANKE, LOVE, early ROLLING STONES, '60's girl groups and the impressions they all made on contemporary pop darlings like BELLE & SEBASTIAN or THE MAGNETIC FIELDS. Specifically placed string sections, horns, bells and strange percussion sounds reflect off of warm soul rhythms or electrifying pop songs, overflowing with claustrophobic melodies and an unmistakable AM radio vibe. The music is brand new and eerily familiar at the same time. The end result is a classic pop record - the rare type of music that inspires immediate intrigue and spontaneous dance parties, staying on repeat and stuck in your head for months at a time.

This is a fantastic CD, it was absolutely perfect for this summer. The musical arrangements are great with upwards of a dozen people performing on a song. This CD has something of a "Beat Happening" approach to lyrics, where the band looks back at life as young adults from an older point-of-view. They make this album more timely by adding in the increasing impersonalization of our society due to gentrification and industrial expansion. But the songs are still great indie songs with lots of pop hooks. The songs have a lot of energy to them, and this CD captures the band's enthusiasm perfectly.

Look for their upcoming album "Every Night" this Fall.

this cd is alright, but definately not what i expected. i was thinking more lo-fi power-pop, something like a grage-band/weezer vibe. it's more like classic oldies... infact, it's exactaly like classic oldies. download some tracks before you spend the money on this, because it is definately something you have to have broad taste to listen to... and not a type of album you would expect to buy on a website called "interpunk".
