26 years old, 6 foot 2 inches tall, green eyes, brown hair. Michael RyanParsell - 23 years old, 6 feet tall, green eyes, brown hair. The quickest path between two points is a straight line and sometimes the lightest load is truly that which weighs the least. At 26, Brian Sokel has played in numerous bands throughout the years, but has stuck most notably with the band Franklin. Their brand of rhythm-centric, post punk developed over the course of eight years and branded them genre bending, albeit confusing and elusive. After the recording of what was to be Franklin's final release, Sokel found himself working on four-track recordings of songs that didn't fit the mold of what was, by then, Franklin's sound. Finding himself with several cassette tapes of these four-track demos, Sokel brought on Michael Parsell (a long time friend who has spent time in such bands as Frail, Goodbye, Blue Monday and most recently The Science Of) to add dimension to the then, acoustic only songs. Sokel's large inventory of music piled up over the next few months, and once encouraged by others who had heard the circulated AM/FM demo tape, Sokel and Parsell pursued the project more intently. Shortly after, AM/FM released their debut, the Audiot CDep, on the Skylab record label. Trying to break free from a more traditional idea of music that is written, arranged and then recorded, Sokel chooses to enter the studio with frames of songs rather than complete visions. This allows for songs to determine their own direction as they are recorded to tape, with Sokel the orchestrator. AM/FM, enlisting help from other members of several local bands including Franklin, Aspera Ad Astra and Ink & Dagger, created a project where interaction and collaboration was the real focus. Following the release of the AM/FM's Audiot CDep, Brian and Michael began writing and arranging songs to create what would become their first full length album. With Terrence Yerves and the Meatlocker studio in Philadelphia, they were able to spend what would become nearly six months in the studio developing, arranging, and orchestrating songs. Nearly a dozen musicians, all from local Philadelphia bands such as Aspera Ad Astra, Franklin, The Science Of, Lenola, and The Unfixers, assisted in creating a 13 song slice of time. Mutilate Us, is an album that puts Sokel's style somewhere between bedroom fantasy, pop wanderings, and densely packed musical compositions. Multi-layered vocal harmonies play over songs that twist and turn from acoustic pulses into electric coughs and howls. A rustic and organic exploration into contemporary Americana that lyrically and musically contradict from song to song. However, what remains true is the simple honesty to which the songs are presented. It is this honesty that makes AM/FM's songs universal. Certainly, half a year in the studio will develop and polish a record, but Mutilate Us manages to sound both perfect and simultaneously sincere and uncontrived. And unlike many studio-heavy projects, AM/FM is a full touring band. They play as simply as just Sokel and Parsell, or as a full seven piece band. Look for AM/FM to roll out on tour nationally this spring.
