This album sounds somewhat like the Red Hot Chili Peppers CD "Californication"; maybe it's just the nature of the recording. Modest Mouse tend to avoid grandiose melodies, sticking instead to their moody indie rock roots. Oftentimes that means long instrumental breaks and quite a bit of cello, which may be trying for some less patient listeners. Yet there are interesting songs worth waiting for: "Lounge" and "Dog Paddle" each have absorbing guitar grooves that the band would use to better effect on their later records. It isn't bad by any stretch, if you can sit through long spells of the same scenery seeming to perpetuate itself off into oblivion.

I think this is probably one of Modest Mouse's best albums, it's my favorite at least. One of the best indy band's ever with a sound that has yet been uncaptured and unique. Some people call them emo but I dont see it cuz emo sucks. Modest Mouse is a fucking great band.

Indie-Rock's King, Modest Mouse, proves again what writting music is all about. Desinging the most relaxing, yet aggresive, the most rockin', yet mellow music you could ever find. Modest Mouse is just the band that plays the perfect kind of music using quiet a few diffrent styles but making it all a perect combination. These guys are defintely one of the best bands out there with a lot to offer to their listeners.
