Released some time before Modest Mouse turned to shit, this one ranks among the best albums of the 90s, period. Within ten seconds of putting on the first song, you'll feel as though you've been transported in the desolate midwest. Awkward, jagged, pretty, and essential. Damn you, Sony. You ruined a great band.

Yea, well, I had heard a lot of good things about Modest Mouse so I figure, what the hell I'll try them out. I fell asleep listening to it. Yawn. Then I gave it to my sister. Hope I never see that CD again. But, I've heard worse, like the Leonard Nimoy Christmas album.

my sister bought this one, but i love the mouse more then her..and i listen to this cd all the time.....the three best songs would have to be 'jesus was an only child' 'doin the cockroach' 'shit luck' (not in ne order)these guys have the most unique style and deserve so much fucking respect...but they are getting way popular..it sucks..oh well i am a die hard fan!!

Modest Mouse is THE best band out there right now. this is...what...their second album? its amazing. every song is great; theyre long and the moods change constantly. itll start out crazy with screamin' and hollerin' then mellow out into what sounds like a completely different song then go crazy again. its great. buy every modest mouse album (except sad sappy sucker, but even get that if you wanna hear their earliest stuff thats reminiscent of built to spill). buy their newest album too, these guys are getting huge.

I love everything I've heard by modest mouse. Their lyrics are some of the best poetry I've ever heard, and their music is excellent. Although I gave this 5 stars, I like "the moon and antarctica" better, I'd give that a 10 if I could. They're both great. This album is scratchier and more raw, and "the moon and antarctica" is more melodic (definitely not poppy though) and clever.

I've had this record for almost a year now and it still remains one of the primo elements of my collection. Lyrically headstrong and witty, instrumentally and vocally twangy, Lonesome Crowded West will set your balls(or hair given you're not of the male persuasion) ablaze and throw your sissy, ignorant imagination into another place, perhaps a desert road or barbeque somewhere in the deep south. Reason being is that the theme of travel reappears over and over on this album, which some would appreciate. Also, they bring in a violin on one of the tracks. Can't beat that instrument, dammit. I don't care if you buy this or not. What am I?

These guys are a really good band. If your a fan of the indy/emo type of music youll love this cd. They have a really uniqe style of writing songs and playing them. This is no poppy crap...definatly no catch lines in their songs. I highy recomened it.
