Dumb Looks Still Free

Smog Veil 26

Released on May 20, 2002

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

The Offbeats existed from summer 1981 to fall 1987. Beginning as a mix of pop, punk, and hardcore (or simply "thrash pop," as some 'zines called their music). Later the sound became more of a loose form of punk rock 'n roll. Along the way there were a few record releases and a whole lot of personnel changes. It all began when Tom "Tommy Hawk" Miller and Bob Richey of the recently disbanded GENERICS (Smog Veil retrospective on the way) and later of THE PAGANS and PINK HOLES began rehearsing with Larry "Keith/Lair Matic" Lewis. Larry was previously guitarist and vocalist with the AK-47'S and BRONCS. Moments later the band went to Cave Studio and recorded Larry's song "Lost in Rome," "Key of E," and Tom’s, "Ned." The first two ended up on the CLEVELAND CONFIDENTIAL LP (Terminal Records) billed as solo recordings by John and Larry. The Offbeats song on CLE CONFIDENTIAL, "I'm Confused," is actually an old GENERICS recording. In the spring of 1982 the band recorded 5 songs which ended up on THIS TAPE SUCKS and SHED YOUR PRIDE, two low grade tape comps put out by Tom. After a few lineup changes in 1983, the band released it’s debut 7” “WHY DO YOU HANG OUT?”. 1984 saw the band record a dozen or so songs for their first LP (some never released until now). 4 songs ended up on I CAN SEE YOUR HOUSE FROM HERE, the second 7 inch EP. One other recording, "Alaska/Society," went onto the THEY PELTED US WITH ROCKS AND GARBAGE Comp LP. After non-stop gigging, the band signed with Relativity and recorded 1986’s “EVOLUTION OF THE STICKMAN” LP. Also released was the OUT OF BREATH single on St. Valentine Records as a "teaser" for the album. It all fell apart in 1987 after a tour with the Lemonheads. Today, you’ll pay dearly for an Offbeats record if you can find it. This Smog Veil retrospective compiles all the best stuff plus tons of unreleased material. Extensive liner notes and never before published photos round out the package.
