After 2 years THE SULTANS finally follow up their critically overlooked and criminally underappreciated debut with Shipwrecked. This time around Slasher (aka Speedo) Guitar and vox, Black Velvet (aka Dean Reis) Bass, and Tony DiPrima (aka Tony DiPrima) Drum kit, shed the fuzz in favor for a castrated, white, chiming sound.
Shipwrecked is an amalgam of simplistic chord thuggery and late 70's power pop sheen. Immersed in the sounds of THE NERVES (LA), THE SAINTS, RAMONES, TESTORS and THE KIDS, THE SULTANS reinvent themselves as lovesick vermin quick to placate their frustration due to a lack of options through song. Guitars ring with a Byrdsian jangle and inept, suburbanite melodicism. Drums thud with a penchant for caveman repetition and a deadened flat sound. The bass holds everything together with descending/ascending booming and tasteful tastiness.
THE SULTANS are today's quintessential power trio complete with instantly memorable hooks and a penchant for combining familiar pop structures with reckless and bold execution. Shipwrecked was recorded by John Reis at the Drag Racist compound (HOT SNAKES, GOGOGO AIRHEART, The HUSBANDS, ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, etc.) and showcases the band in both naked and well clothed glory.
