Such Great Heights
(Ben From Death Cab For Cutie, Jimmy From Figurine)
Sub Pop 608
Released on January 21, 2003
|
What can you say about this release, other than espouse and praise the songwriting gifts of Death Cab for Cutie's frontman and singer, Ben Gibbard. A seeming departure from the aytpical indie rock stylings of his more recognized band, The Postal Service isn't that much of a musical leap and seems like a natural progession for Ben, whose experimentation with lo-fi and synths can be seen in many All-Time Quaterback and early DCFC songs. With the help of Jimmy Tamborello of Figurine, The Postal Service create songs reminiscent of early 80's heros New Order, and the Human League, except of course, argueably better. Highlights of this CD Single are the reworkings by fellow Seattle scenesters The Shins and the heartwrenchingly tender remake by Iron and Wine, stripped bare and acoustic Ben's words take on a whole new meaning in the voice of Sam Beam, the force behind the one man, Iron and Wine.

Worth it just for Iron & Wine's cover, but the shins cover is also pretty good. Definatly worth the money.

This is a good release. I like all the songs. Iron and Wine is really good, but when The Shins cover a song you know it's going to be good. Buy this cd.

This is a pretty good release, I bought it for my girlfriend. In all honesty, Iron and Wine's version of the title track is better than the original, while The Shins' submission is about tied. The album artwork doesn't really display the sound thats on the album that well, but this is a good CD nonetheless.

The reason why I gave this ep a five is because its a teaser ep for their full length (Give Up) that came out early 2003. 'Give Up' is one of my favorite cds at the moment and is in my normal rotation in the cd player. BUY GIVE UP by THE POSTAL SERVICE, you will fall in love.
