Ugly Organ

Saddle Creek 51

Released on March 4, 2003

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

With its combination of dynamic instrumentation, diverse and accomplished songwriting and lyrical catharsis The Ugly Organ forges a unique musical and lyrical territory that actually justifies the (non-ironic) label of "concept album." What exactly the concept of The Ugly Organ may be, however, is up for debate. "Some people focus sexuality entirely on the penis or vagina," says Cursive’s Tim Kasher. "Others consider the heart or the mind to be the most sexual organ. For others, it might be an object completely outside the body, such as a musical instrument." Regardless, The Ugly Organ is stunning and cohesive work, by turns wildly dissonant ("Some Red Handed Slight of Hand," "A Gentleman Caller") and beautifully restrained ("Driftwood: A Fairy Tale," "The Recluse"), with organ and cello lines, thundering rhythms and disjointed guitars meshing in a symbiotic relationship with Kasher’s narrative.

Simply said, one of the greatest noises i've ever heard. From beginning to end. If you enjoy cursive, you will learn to worship this album rather abruptly. Enjoy! I know I did!!

This album is perhaps one of the most artful and creative layouts i've seen in 5 years. Buy the LP, pull out the lyrics sheet, and read along. It flows like a play, and is written like one. Also one of the most raw and most real albums to come out for a while. Tim Kasher's life is like an open book in this beautiful, sad, touching, and breathtaking narrative. Listen to this album straight through, it will move you.
