Mourningstar was created in 2002 by five guys who had similar taste in music and similar ideas on politics, religion, and life. The bands unconventional style of melodic punk/hardcore comes from their wide array of musical influence, from the Strung Out and Misfits, to The Smiths and U2. In the summer of 2003, Mourningstar recorded Disrato, a 13 track full length that was released by Falcom Records in August of 2004. Shortly after its release, they found themselves on the road, playing over 100 shows, including three east coast tours and dates on 2005 Vans Warped Tour. In late 2005, Mourningstar signed with New School Records and booked a studio session with producer Matt Goldman (Underoath, The Chariot, Cartel, Copeland) to get their new full length tracked. With their excitement of joining the New School roster, the bands has agreed to take it full time and tour as much as possible too get the exposure they need to catch the eyes of punk rock fans everywhere.
The Antioch is an honest elucidation of Mourningstar’s view on modern day society, religion, politics, economics, love and life. The music is aggressive, yet melodic, while the lyrics are delivered with angst and packed with social discontent. The bands approach to this record was definitely not sugar coated, nor over produced and engineer/producer Matt Goldman (Underoath, The Chariot, Cartel, Copeland) was able to capture the exact sound they were going for. The artwork is well thought out and features illustrations painted by Strung Out’s front man Jason Cruz. So, if you’re looking for an unconventional brand of melodic punk/hardcore, Mourningstar is the band for you! The Antioch is for fans of Strung Out, AFI, Thrice, Rise Against and Good Riddance.
