Old Man Markley

Down Side Up

Fat Wreck Chords 792

Released on March 5, 2013

Vinyl includes MP3 download card

OLD MAN MARKLEY burst onto the scene in 2010 armed with their punk rock sensibilities, an ear for pop melodies, a love for Bluegrass deep within their hearts, and a van full of traditional instruments, ranging from a fiddle to a homemade washtub bass and everything in between. The result has been phenomenal. Their first album, Guts n’ Teeth, debuted at #8 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts, and established the band’s “Newgrass” sound as a welcome addition to both the traditional Americana and punk rock worlds. Of course, where OLD MAN MARKLEY really shine is in front of a crowd and they’ve shown this off relentlessly over the past two years, touring with the likes of Flogging Molly, Bad Religion, The Reverend Horton Heat, NOFX, The Descendents, The Devil Makes Three, Against Me!, Supersuckers and many more. OMM’s party-first attitude and tireless jovial energy has won over droves of new fans along the way. Now that they’ve got everyone’s attention OLD MAN MARKLEY are set to deliver their follow-up album Down Side Up. Its 13 addictively melodic tracks are built around silky smooth 3 part harmonies, guided by a galloping rhythm, and laced with lightning fast banjo, playful violin, and just about every other traditional instrument you can imagine. With NOFX’s Fat Mike as producer, Down Side Up still showcases that punk rock influence that OMM are known for, but it also expands the depth of their Bluegrass side. OLD MAN MARKLEY softened us up with Guts n’ Teeth, and now they are going in for the kill with Down Side Up. You best grab your dancin’ shoes.

This is an amazing album. Since hearing their first album, all the b-sides and meeting them in person I have been a huge fan of their music. This album is no exception. It has the same Old Man Markley feel that I got from Guts n Teeth but they expand on it and bring something new to the table. These guys are some amazing musicians and should not be overlooked. Even if you havn't heard the first album, pick this one up and give it a listen.
