Classics of Love began in February of 2008 when Jesse Michaels, former
lead singer of East Bay mainstays Operation Ivy, joined forces with San
Jose's Hard Girls. Initially formed as a project to demo a few songs
Michaels was working on, the members discovered that they had good
musical compatibility and decided to form an ongoing band. After some
early touring Classics offered up their first EP, 2009's Walking in Shadows
which served up 6 songs of mid-tempo punk in the traditional East Bay
vein: catchy, energetic and gritty. The following 2 years saw the band
playing selective shows and slowly developing their sound. During this
period, Classics incorporated other musical influences including a few
ska and rock songs and most notably a barrage of up-tempo numbers
heavily influenced by early 1980's Hardcore. 2011 saw the recording of
their self titled full-length to be released on Asian Man Records in
February of 2012. The record features a slew of high energy tracks which
favors the band's neo-hardcore approach but also includes ska and punk
songs as well as a few surprises. Recorded in a raw and unaffected style
by local favorite Jack Shirley, Classics of Love's eponymous first
record is bound to become a classic in its own right for all those who
enjoy punk music which knows its history and looks forward at the same
time.

wow. what a great record. i love everything jesse michaels does, but this really blew me away. some songs have a really cool 80's hardcore vibe, and some have the operation ivy/common rider ska sound. i'm very happy to have this in my collection.

So let's say op ivy was still together and dropped about 95% of their ska and made a full fledge punk album, this would be it! This album is perfect from start to finish and i couldnt be happier to own a copy of this.

Dropping the needle on this record I attempted to stay objective, that is a very difficult thing to do when you know what is spinning in front of you. What I hear is quite surprising, a slow muddy guitar and a deep voice. The turntable is on the wrong speed. Before I have heard anything this record has two pluses, Jesse Michaels on Vocals and it's a 45rpm lp. I listened to the album twice back to back in one sitting and I have to say I had high expectations and I am in no way disappointed. Here is where I should say if band A and band B had a baby it would sound like this but I am not going to. Favorite songs uh,, I would list half the record if I started. Rating. If you stole all my records I would have to get this again and I would be pissed that I don't have it in colored vinyl and ½ stars. Obligatory quote “Beat your plough shares into swords. Watch the bombs drop. Watch the rewards. Where do they go? If not the houses of the ones who staged the show?”
