Lucero

Women & Work

ATO

Released on March 13, 2012

$21.50

Recorded at the historic ardent Studios in Memphis, Women & Work was produced and mixed by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly) and shows an impressive step forward in both songwriting and development of the band’s signature Memphis rock and soul sound. Frontman Ben Nichols says, “This record is Lucero doing what we do best. It’s one part barrelhouse Rock & Roll and one part lonesome nights. This thing is, we are having more fun than ever playing both on stage and off and I think that shows on this album.”

The 1st listen seemed quite difficult, but I was also with company. So weeks later I tried it again and I really dug it much more. On my way downtown is a groovy tune. I do not think the album is their best effort though. There is a couple good tunes but I do hope they go back to Nobody's Darlings sound sometime. In the meantime I support them none the less. Some of my favorite albums and songs are ones that I was 1st unsatisfied with then later rediscovered the genius or simplicity of them. It becomes great when a band steps out of their realm and successfully lays out something special.
