BYO 125

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

Told through interviews and rare footage of the explosive LA Punk Rock scene from the 80s until now, Let Them Know: The Story Of Youth Brigade And BYO Records looks at the last 25 years of the influential LA punk band Youth Brigade and BYO Records, as well as documenting the early LA punk and DIY scene. Riots, harassment from the law, amazing bands, crazy stories and best of all, one family’s earnest desire to change the world through punk rock are captured in this documentary.

Founded by brothers Shawn and Mark Stern from the band Youth Brigade, the BYO was a part political movement, part business venture that served as a way to organize punks to take positive action to help sustain their scene and their way of life. The ideals upon which it was founded helped countless bands put on shows, put out records, and otherwise get their music out to the world. It allowed for the making of the landmark punk documentary “Another State Of Mind” and it spawned BYO Records, which stands today as one of the oldest surviving independent punk rock labels in the world. BYO, Youth Brigade, and the Stern family are three intertwined entities that comprise one of the too-often-overlooked chapters in the history of punk.

Interviews with Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat, founder of Dischord Records), Fat Mike (NOFX, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, founder of Fat Wreck Chords), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Gray Tovar (founder of Goldenvoice Promotions), Brendan Mullen (founder of The Masque Club, author of “Lexicon Devil”), members of the Bouncing Souls, Swingin’ Utters, 7 Seconds, and many others involved in the SoCal scene.

Contains: A full length 90 minute DVD documentary by director Jeff Alulis with 30 minutes of bonus footage; A 100 page coffee table book that is full-color and hardbound full of snippets, anecdotes and rare intimate photos about the evolving independent punk rock scene through the past 25 years; 2 full length color vinyl LPs with 31 exclusive recordings of classic songs from the extensive BYO catalog; And a bonus CD version of the entire thing.

How can you not give it a five stars. Hard coffee table book with 2xLP, CD and DVD. This package is awesome and is a must have for any true oldschool American punk fans.

The DVD is really great and tells the story of Youth Brigade and BYO records but also the LA scene in the late 70’s and 80’s. Plenty of historic live footage, shows, touring story, riot! and interview with Fat Mike, The Briefs, 7 Seconds, Matt Skiba, Adolescents, Ian Makaye, etc….You’ll learn a lot about how big and crazy this scene was! Haven’t finish the book yet but it seems pretty interesting too…The LP are great except I’m not a fan of many bands that do the cover on it (Nofx, Pulley, Pennywise, Lag know that typical Fat Wreck skate punk shit….) at least they cover great band…..Best band are the Briefs, Cute Lepers, Youth Brigade, 7 Seconds and Bouncing Souls. Don’t pass on this piece of collection, it worth the price!

Loved the story of BYO records. Loved the Selection of bands on the record. The Subhumans do an amazing cover of Piss on you(Personality Crisis) and Youth Brigade cover Misfortune(SNFU) excellently.
