In a small bedroom in San Diego, plastered with posters of favorite bands, ticket stub memories, and a drum set that was bought at a local swap meet for fifty bucks, four teenage friends were born into a future of fast paced, melodic punk. Out of the need for a release of creativity and aggression, Before Today was formed in December of 1998. Since then, the band has been striving on opportunities to explode out of their practice room onto any stage possible. Their mixture of poetic lyrics, which focus on ideas of self-improvement and positive progression, are combined with complex guitar and vocal melodies to create a powerful sound that is both aggressive and refreshingly clean. Their energy is fueled by a creative and energetic identity that matches their personalities. A strong diversity of influences becomes apparent as you listen to the many different elements evident in their songs. After signing with Equal Vision in December of 2003, the band, formerly known as Early Times, decided to change their name due to copyright issues. Quickly after signing with EVR, the band sequestered themselves from the world for the better part of six months crafting their debut release under their new moniker. The outcome, A Celebration Of An Ending, is an elegant document of the marriage between melody and aggression. The songs on the album show a band beginning to create their own niche in the crowded world of independent music. Before Today is determined to take their musical vision from a regional happening to a global phenomenon.

This CD is really amazing. The lyrics are extrememly well written, and the guitar work is very good. Before Today is one of the handful of good SoCal bands to come out. And 'good' is an understatement, this CD is INCREDIBLE. The vocals are outstanding, Vic does an astounding job of harmonies. I could really just go on forever about this CD, but I'm just going to end with two words. BUY IT!

This album is definitely different sounding than most I have heard. To me, it's kind of like vocals from Glassjaw mixed with the vocals from Armor For Sleep. The screaming is like a mix of Underoath and From Autumn To Ashes. I want to say there is a pinch of Wings of Azrael anjd Thursday in there. What is really noticeable is that the emo/hardcore sound is mixed in with the punk/core drumming of bands like Rise Against. I pick out the various aspects not to say that these guys are imitators but to show the strange diversity in the music. Song length averages about 3 and a half minutes. I am on the borderline between 4 and 5 here because it's dissapointing in one way. It's pretty short. It's 10 songs and about 35 minutes long. But the first and last track are basically intrumental. So there are really only 8 songs here. But I have to give it a 5 because it has such a diverse yet unique sound. I picked it up after hearing Roots Beneath Ideals, The Process of Losing and Gaining and Pierce The Veil. You can hear them on Purevolume.
