DEAD TO FALL began as one of the Midwest’s best kept secrets, being one of the pioneering bands to bring on the first wave of Swedish tinged Metalcore. As their peers continue to clone themselves at a disappointing rate, DEAD TO FALL has embraced change and pushed their sound with each album to melt minds worldwide.
Their new record Are You Serious? is a breath of fresh life in a dying scene. It is a truth-bringer in a musical era which could soon drown in uninspired art. The album strays from an overplayed poetic outlook in exchange for a brutally honest viewpoint that is inspired by the band members’ real-life experiences. Intelligent songwriting, memorable melodic passages, and intensely abrasive heaviness have been mixed with a sense of fearless creativity and sarcasm that will have you asking yourself, Are You Serious?
With each record, their music becomes more forward-thinking and imaginative. Their clever musical vision is complimented with their tongue-in-cheek lyrical concepts. Not only does Are You Serious? make a bold musical statement about the current state of heavy music, but it is the best collection of songs in their nine-year history. DEAD TO FALL fiercely reinforce the fact that metal empowers its listeners and encourages them to enjoy life.

When Dead to Fall released Phoenix Throne, it seemed like they had solidified their position in the genre pretty effectively. This CD, the band claimed, was going to focus more on guitars and be their most rocking effort yet. I was hoping that Are You Serious? would in fact be another step in the right direction. It was not. To be fair, I really like all of their fast songs. My problem is this: on their previous release, the slower tempo songs were all very heavy and extremely cool. On this CD, the slow songs are weird, excessively long, and quite boring. Everything after the fifth track just blends together in a soporific concoction that made me question whether I just bought the new Dead to Fall or some damn trance music. Buy Phoenix Throne, buy Villainy and Virtue, and then only buy this CD if you want to see what happens when Dead to Fall and Prodigy copulate.
