Rise Against

Siren Song Of The Counter Culture

Geffen B000296702

Released on August 10, 2004

Chicago's Rise Against might be seen as an outcast amongst it's peers. Armed with the fury of classic punk acts such as Minor Threat and Bad Brains, they blend intelligent vocals with a serious commitment to providing a positive alternative to the oft-dreary and disenchanted aura that engulfs most punk bands.

This is my least favorite album by Rise Against, but it does have a couple of really good songs on it. My favorite is "State of the Union". I don't usually like stuff with a lot of screaming in it, but somehow RA can pull it off without forcing me to skip songs. "Blood to Bleed" and "Give It All" are also really good songs. "Swing Life Away" may be an acoustic song, but it's also really good. Those are the only songs I really ever listen to on this, but I think they were worth buying. I think what I like most is that they never seem to lose their sound. I like their Fat Wreck Chords albums better, but this is still a solid album. Have I confused you yet? Well, I'm a confusing person, so check out the other reviews.

This is an awesome album. I've always liked rise against, but never loved them until i bought this cd. It's infectious melodies with hard hitting lyrics and punishing music is just awesome. 'swing life away' is an acoustic song that is almost the best on the album. 'dancing for rain' and 'paper wings' totally blow you away with their music and lyrics. it's an powerful album and any fan of rise against would not be disappointed!

Rise Against amazes me. They are on a major label, and yet their music is still as great as when they were on Fat Records. This one starts with the ultra-heavy "State of the Union"(my favorite song on the album). That song is not a good idea of what the album sounds like. "Life Less Frightning" is a great song, softer, but still great. This is a good idea of what the rest will sound like. It's basicly melodic hardcore, with screaming(not too much though). Some other favorites are "Give It All", "To them these Streets Belong" and "Dancing For Rain". Worth the purchase if you like EpiFat music.

This album has a few good tracks on it. None of it really sucks. But a lot of it has a real studio feel to it. Which just hurts it. I like a little bit of grit and feeling in the voice. Not just a perfect clean recording.

This CD is amazing, pure punk rock. Loud, fast, and rebellious, just like it should be. I loved it. My favorite songs have to be State of the Union, To Them These Streets Belong, and Give It All, for said reasons, but really, every song is great. This is a must-have for any punk lover's collection.

I've listened to their songs on the Fat compilations, but I never got into them...until recently.

This is one awsome album.

Another Rise Against masterpiece. I´m totally satisfied. State of the Union is perfect introduction to Siren Song... The First Drop and Life Less Frightening little sound (for me!) than Bad Religion style. The great guitar play is at Paper Wings and begin Tip the Scales. Of course bass, drums and vocals are too great. Blood to Bleed is beautiful anthem. Anywhere But Here-supersonic drums. Lyrics and vocals are strong weapons of RA. I like all songs but my favourite songs are State of the Union, The First Drop, Paper Wings, Give It All(excellent vocals) and Dancing for Rain. My epilogue about Siren Song...-perfect guitars, vocals, drums, bass and lyrics. Only disappointment for me is Geffen Rec.(Universal Music). S.I.M.O.

Another great album from Rise Against. Without surrendering anything of their power, RA has added a mellow, or let's say more melodic, upside on this album. The progression gap between SS and RPM is not as large as between RPM and the Unraveling, but it is still noticeable : although this progression is not as much quality-wise (which was top on RPM already) than skill/mastery-wise. The music is better wrought and what they've maybe lost on the "pure hardcore" side is more than counterbalanced by the gain in maturity : no track can be called a filler. Siren Song in the confirmation of RA's talent. This is what makes RA's not your average hardcore band. P.S. : Dancing for Rain is probably one of RA's very best songs to date.

It´s Rise Against, so it´s worth getting if you´re a fan, but if you don´t have any of their music don´t get this one first. It´s nowhere near as good as "Revolutions Per Minute", although it does have a few memorable tracks. Its saving grace is the amazing "Swing Life Away", although it doesn´t sound a whole lot different from the original acoustic version which you can download pretty easily. Most of the songs here are a little too predictable and organized, so for their next release hopefully they´ll find that happy middle ground between catchy repetitiveness and experimentation.

What happened? I loved the "unraveling" and "RPM" CDs but this one is way much popier than the previous ones... I can't find the passion and inspiration that this band used to have and even the sound of the guitars is quite annoying (over-produced). I'll give it two stars but compared to the previous CDs this record is less than nothing : don't buy it if you expect a punk album : this is pop and uninspired for the majority of the songs.
