MC Lars

Laptop EP

Side Cho

Released on July 27, 2004

This item is not available for purchase. Sorry!

MC Lars is set to release his US debut, The Laptop EP, on SideCho Records this summer. His music is best described as new school punk-rap that blends styles of Atom and His Package, Beastie Boys and old-school Run DMC with samples from bands such as Brand New and Piebald. MC Lars made his east coast debut at this year’s Skate And Surf and will go out on the first ever AbsolutePunk.net Tour in the US in June with Audio Karate, Say Anything, and Lance’s Hero. Following the Absolutepunk.net tour, Lars heads to the UK for T in The Park, other festivals and a string of shows with Piebald.

The Laptop EP is a selection of songs that appropriately showcase Lars’ mental muscles for the first time. Subject selection ranges from the outright autobiographical “Straight Outta Stockholm” to a smirky interpretation of England from the American Student perspective “UK Visa Versa”. “Mr Raven,” one early standout track that samples a Brand New song, came about completely by accident. “I had been reading Poe and listening to Brand New and had this revelation that the four bars of that song fit this meter of Poe’s. It was a song I had to write because the pieces fit well together – I couldn’t help myself.” Then there’s “iGeneration,” which is both a nod and stab at fast-tracked technology. However, it was the early writing and recording of “Hurricane Fresh” that proved to be Lars’ first breakthrough. “It was the first time I saw what a bridge could do. It hit me how to take hip hop elements and really fuse them with rock and pop elements, because a lot of rap songs don’t have a bridge or pop-oriented song structures. That’s when I realized, OK, here’s my style. Rap music with rock elements and pop conventions, glued together.” Musically, his songs come from computer driven beats, samples and a small pile of instruments that sit next to his dorm room bed. How could he fuse a sound that combines his awkwardly assembled influences, ranging from Weird Al Yankovic to KRS One to The Sex Pistols?

This EP is pretty much the only rap I will listen to. Its just a bunch of nice and upbeat songs that will get your foot tapping. My favorite song on this EP is Straigt Outta Stockholm

As a pretty big hip-hop fan, this cd is definantly different. It's outside of the box if you will. It's good, but it's not something that I play all the time. He's an alright mc, but he's beats aren't all that great.

This cd isnt really for hardcore rap fans. The rapping isnt that good but it gets points cuz the lyrics are funny. It is also pretty cool that he sampled Brand New. Overall I was pretty dissapointed.

MC Lars is an awesome person who makes awesome music. Everyone should get this CD. It is a breath of fresh (no pun intended) air into the music world. When I want to listen to something different, I pop in a Lars CD. Everyone should get Radio Pet Fencing also, as it is great too. Take any chance you get to see him (with DJ and PJ) live. He never disappoints. Enjoy the show, and then talk to him afterwards just to see that he is the most genuinely kind person you will ever meet.

Nice!! Good shit. I bought this cd on a hunch and I'm definately surprised at how good it is. Really funny and intelligent songs. He has a hilarious song about emo and he's got another cool song with a piebald sample that works really well. Really good stuff no matter what kind of music you listen to. Bye it!

This cd is awesome. Put simply, its a mix of rap, rock, punk, emo, and pretty much everything. He raps about stuff like, the state of emo/record industry, the differences between the US and UK, and anything that is going on in our world. He even takes samples from some awesome bands likes Piebald and Brand New. His lyrics are clever and also very funny at the same time. If you have any sense of humor or just love to have an enjoyable time listening to music, you must buy this cd. One thing that is great about this cd is that you can't ever say it sounds like every other band out there, it is 100% original. Enjoy!!!!!
