Matching both the bristling intensity and gooey pop grandeur of John Vanderslice’s Cellar Door, Bemis’ first album follows in a lineage of stabbing but melodic rock and roll including Husker Du, Jawbreaker and, at times, even Elvis Costello. Produced by the incomparable Tim O’Heir (Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, the The All-American Rejects) with arrangements by Stephen Trask (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and conceived as a rock opera, the resulting record follows the switchbacks and hairpin turns of personal narrative – like Bright Eyes’ Fevers and Mirrors but with the unwavering enthusiasm and crunchy momentum of Phantom Planet. Say Anything Is a Real Boy hardly sounds like the work of one person, and so to capture the full impact live, Bemis has enlisted Coby Linder on drums, Kevin Seaton on bass and Casper Adams on guitar. The band’s first tour found them sharing stages with The Get-Up Kids, Dashboard Confessional, Cave-In and Thrice, playing smart, inspired rock and roll beyond the pale of simplistic genre labels. This is your late summer soundtrack – the perfect companion to the bittersweet feeling of good times in the waning sunshine.
"There is a subtle irony that those humble artists and songwriters who would consider themselves of average intellectual ‘musical’ capacity are usually those who provide the most genius and musical evolutionary leaps in their work. [Dylan, Springsteen, Lennon and McCartney] were able to capture an attitude and honesty of a generation … a similar musical actualization may have just taken place … the brash intelligence of Bright Eyes... Could this be the shape of music to come?” – Jason Tate / Absolutepunk.net

Awesome cd. Very unique rock. The lyrics are clever without being inane and the songs themselves are well written.

This CD is great and I am surprised more people don't know who this band is considering how catchy some of the songs are. All in all, I would recommend this CD to just about anyone. Pick it up, its good.

When I first got this CD I could not stop listening to it. The lyrics seems so honest, which is definately Say Anything's strong point. All around an enjoyable CD. It definately lives up to the hype.

I bought this CD a while back... probably six months ago and this is the best release of 2004. No question about it. Max Bemis has a writing style that's all his own and each lyric will be stuck with you for the rest of time. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

I really liked this CD. It was something different. It's like an emo/acoustic project mixed with punk and heavier rock influences as well as a political message with some symbolism in there, too (see: yellow cat (slash) red cat). I was a little disappointed with the version of "Woe" on here. I had downloaded what I suppose was a rough demo and it was a little less manufactured and better sounding in my opinion, but other than that I don't have any complaints. The CD starts off great and ends great. It's just two guys screwing around with guitars and percussion and they come up with something that's awesome. Best songs: "Belt" "Alive with the Glory of Love", "Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat", "Every Man Has a Molly", and "I Want To Know Your Plans". Just buy this CD. It's different but something for everyone on here.

This is one of the greatest albums i have ever heard in my life! I didn't think music could get this good... but it does! Every song on here is absolutely brilliant... i remember listening to this cd for the first time and after every song on the album i had the biggest smile on my face that i just couldn't wipe off... mainly because i didn't know what was going to happen next and max bemis has just created perfection in every single song... This is a MUST cd for anyone who needs a bit of a change in their music style! it may seem the same on the surface but listen to all the instruments and the different timings that 'say anything' uses and you will be gobsmacked like myself! If you are on the fence about buying this album, jump off that fence and go and get this album! This is music at its best!
