As a huge connoisseur of live albums - especially live Bad Brains albums, I was quite happy to see that a live show from the earlier days had been *officially* released.

Upon first glance, the song selection on this album looked just incredible. When you buy a Bad Brains live album, you have to expect the core songs you know they'll play for the most part, such as Right Brigade, I and Fearless Vampire Killers. Those are on this album as they rightfully should be, but the songs to be excited about are rarities like We Will Not, Destroy Babylon and Joshua's Song.

Along with some of the lesser-played songs like How Low Can A Punk Get?, you get some unreleased and lesser played reggae like Rally Round Jah Throne. A really cool and interesting note to point out is the song Jah The Conqueror. I found myself singing along to this song - but how? I've never heard of a Bad Brains song called Jah The Conqueror. Then it hit me - this is the 'hidden' reggae song on the self titled ROIR CD re-release! It's a great early reggae tune of theirs, and now we have a name to put to it.

Moving onto the actual audio of the show, it's alright. It has a cool and very raw feel to it, but it's nothing too special. The point is, it's solid enough. Apart from the song selection, this album still doesn't beat my favourite official live Bad Brains album, the one from '88 titled as just "Live." For sound quality and sheer intensity, "Live" has yet to be beaten. For the Bad Brains fan looking for their first live album, I'd suggest "Live," but "Live At CBGB '82" would make a great second choice. Happy listening!

As the fifth authorized live Bad Brains CD, "Live at CBGB's" actually offers up several things not available on the other four live releases. First off is the time period of the recording. This is the first available early-80s live CD by Bad Brains. This is the time period that many people consider to the the peak of the band, so it is fascinating to hear them in their prime. The second big bonus is that this CD contains several reggae/dub jams that are previously unavailable/unreleased. The sound quality is good - as good as any of their other live releases, and the liner notes are an interesting read as well.
