Oil: Chicago Punk Refined
Thick 86
Released on February 11, 2003
|
NOT JUST ANOTHER COMP...What you hold in your hands are 19 songs recorded in 15 days inside a make shift “guerilla style” recording studio in an old oil blending factory located on Chicagos’ South Side. The recording process, the bands involved, the eventual songs - are all perfect representations of Chicago’s rich tradition as a "no bones about it" working class town. Listen closely, there is no glitz, no polish, only grit and glory. Listen even closer and hear the sounds of the city; trains, planes, Highway 55, and the factory itself, continuously grinding and working mercilessly . The result is a big studio sound within a rugged factory setting. OIL is both a triumph and tribute to storied history of Chicago’s industry, politics, and punkrock. This is a snapshot of the Chicago underground. These songs can not be found anywhere else but here. This is history-Chicago style.

| bought it for the alk3 song and really didnt care what the rest of the cd had to offer, but i ended up being surprised by the plain white t's. rise against and duvall also have strong showings, so i say it's worth the $5 or whatever. just keep in mind there is a reason we havent heard of half of the bands listed. |

| Truthfully i only bought this for the alkaline trio song, and lawrence arms song, and that was pretty much the only ones i liked on it, i did like the plain white t's, and rise against songs too, but the rest where just mediocre, not bad, just not rockin...if ya feel me. Still cheap and a good listen. Pick it up if you like the bands on it. |

| Wow, I heard about this cd back in the fall of 2002. It was a good idea, getting a lot of well known Chicago bands on one comp, and have them play at a factory.
The thing is that it's hard to like a lot of these bands, espcically the ones I don't know that well.
Rise Against: Amazing song, best on the cd. Their stuff is always good.
Alkaline Trio: You can really hear a change in their sound, I am not in love with this song, but it's worth hearing.
The Lawrence Arms - my Favorite band, but not my favorite song, it just doesn't do much for me.
There aer other great Chicago bands on here worth hearing: The Arrivals, The Ghost, Tossers, but i'd d/l the good songs if I were you, and don't pay the price for something that is mostly hype. |

| I got this track mainly for the AMAZING Alkaline Trio song "Old School Reasons". The way this CD was recorded and made is unqiue. It's a good mix of chicago punk rock, emo, and indie rock acts. It's worth the cheap price, but there isn't much depth on it besides the Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms, Bitchy and Rise Against tracks though. This album is a 5 for the alkaline trio song, everything else is "eh". |

| This is about as much as you could expect from a compilation. Every song is at least listenable, unlike most comps where you'll get a couple good songs and 15 crap ones. It's hard to say which ones I like the best, but I guess I'll stick with my biased opinion and say that my favorites were from Rise Against and the Larry Arms but I'll definitely be checking out more material by some other bands on here. Which is kinda the point of the whole comp cd idea. Anyway good value for the money, $6 (well 8 with shipping)buys you 19 cool songs and 65 minutes of music. awesome |

| This is a very good comp for only 6 dollars. It doesn't have great sound quality, but that's kinda the idea of the way it was made. I bought it mainly for the Plain White T's song, but all the tracks are good. Great way to learn about Chicago bands. I wouldn't consider it a big hit, but buy it if you are interested in good chicago punk bands. |

| Hey, buy this cd now. This is why you love the chicago scene. There's not a single song on here that isn't worth more than a few listens and at just over five bucks, how can you say no to 19 great songs? The new Alkaline song is great, as are the new Rise Against, and Duvall songs... Actually if you see a band you like on this comp(and you can't even really call this a comp because all the songs were recorded specifically and intentionally for this cd) just buy the cd because the song will be good. I vote this one of the best various artist cds in a really long time. |

| Well, I bought this for the unreleased Rise Against, Lawrence Arms and Alk3 songs. It's a good comp just not a great one. The "rugged" sound it goes for is not my style. Sure its gritty or whatever you call it, but it seems rushed and too sloppy at times. A bunch of good songs on this comp though, hopefully they get more than the hour of studio time to record them like it seems they got for each song. I like that clean sound though. If you like some of the bands on the comp it's def. worth pickin up because of the decent price tag. |
