After successfully emerging from a drug treatment program, FAT’s very own mailorder guru Chicken (also the bassist of Western Addiction) had to figure out something constructive to do with his time. He began writing songs, and soon thereafter gathered up some pals and started a band called DEAD TO ME. The songs were great, and so were the guys he gathered. One of them just happened to be his cousin, while the other once served time in the Army... One Man Army that is! As a full band the writing continued, bringing us to the release of their first full length Cuban Ballerina. With Jack and Chicken sharing vocal duties, there’s never a dull moment, making for a perfect album front to back. DEAD TO ME’s sound is reminiscent of a range of 80’s punk bands, from Stiff Little Fingers and The Buzzcocks, to Bay Area greats like Crimpshrine and Jawbreaker.

I've always been a huge fan of One Man Army, which for those that don't know was Jack's old band. When I heard these guys for the first time, I was blown away. The lyrics are powerful and thought provoking.

It’s one thing to try and describe one’s favorite album of all time, but it is another thing to try and explain what is simply, one of the greatest albums to be created.

I bought this album after I had heard “Don’t Lie” and “By The Throat” on purevolume. I immediately fell in love with both songs.

I finally purchased the album from Interpunk. I received it a few weeks later, stuck it in the CD player, and thus began the changing of what my view on music was.

I’ve owned this album for about 9 months now, and I have listened to the entire album over 200 times, and I have yet to get tired of it. And it’s not like this is my only punk rock album or something, I listen to so much music, particularly punk, so I know where i’m coming from when I say this.

Musically: i’ve read more than a few reviews of this album saying how it’s just “another melodic punk rock album that we’ve all heard ten thousand times”. I find it a lot more original than a LOT of other bands in the genre, of course it’s catchy, sometimes aggressive, sometimes just smooth and easy going. Personally, I think the music is perfect, regardless, THIS IS A PUNK ROCK BAND, punk rock bands recycle music over and over, this isn’t battle of the originals or a bloody classical music release! Plus, the basslines kick and the drumming is solid.

Lyrically: Unreal. With the joined forces of 2 frontmen from 2 incredible bands, what else is to be expected? From what I understood, most of the album was actually penned by Chicken. The lyrics range from political and worldly issues such as “Don’t Lie”

and they range from personal issues to past trails (Chickens drug addiction recovery). Top notch lyrics.

Vocally: (they both sing about the same amount) Couldn’t be better, we’ve got Jack’s slick smooth voice throughout the album, playing a key role in the melodies of this album. (if you liked him in One Man Army, you’ll LOVE him in Dead To Me) As for Chicken, you’d assume his vocals would be rough and aggressive, judging from his work in Western Addiction. But his vocals are a lot smoother and plain, but it complements Jack’s voice perfectly. I actually think Chicken’s vocals on this album are his best and easily just as enjoyable as Jack’s.

Recording is a lot more touched up than Western Addiction and One Man Army, but not overproduced or anything like that.

This album is so bloody enjoyable! Should be a classic, but I don’t know if it will make it to that point, due to the many punk rock releases and the overrated albums. But I don’t think thats what these guys were going for anyway, they’re having fun with this music, and so are we.

5/5 for Cuban Ballerina!

9/9/2008 by Nick from Ottawa, ON Canada Rating:
Very very awesome! From the opening riff and the sound of Jack from One Man Army, you just know this cd is going to rule and it gets better and better. Unfortantly the one downside is....very short, way to short but still great album.

3/12/2008 by Marilyn from Portland, OR Rating:
This CD is just good music. It is short (only about 26 minutes), but very good. The only song I didn't love was "Splendid Isolation" which I still liked a lot. I highly recommend this album and any future releases from this band.

11/5/2007 by Charly from Stillwater, MN Rating:
A great cd. Has some Dalrymple in the band, too.

6/14/2007 by Mark from Charlestown, MA Rating:
These guys are good. Much better than One Man Army. They are neither the best band on Fat Wreck nor the worst. But they compliment the label's roster so that's a plus for them. Overall they are a lot like many of the other bands out there right now that are taking an influence from Alkaline Trio.

2/8/2007 by Johnney from Alhambra, CA Rating:
This is like the East Bay's answer to the Dillinger Four...but a bit more poppier/melodic...but in a VERY good way. Great dual vocals, great lyrics, and just great music overall. It's great to see that the East Bay is still alive with good punk music and not just the crappy emo/screamo shit you hear nowadays. One of the best CD's of 06 for sure.

10/2/2006 by Miles from Chicago, IL Rating:
this is a really enjoyable album. i found it not falling too far from the one man army tree, which is fine by me. it is catchy and fun and the lyrics are pretty good too. fat wreck continues to put out top notch releases.

9/20/2006 by Joey from Riverview, NB Canada Rating:
Everyone seems to really dig this album, I mean Chicken wrote a pretty good album its got a few stand out tracks but Im sorry its just got nothin on Western Addiction.

Id stop this project and get back to work on a new Western Addiction cd cuz hot damn thats where its at.

8/19/2006 by Dr. Paulson from Oak Lawn, IL Rating:
I don't hand out perfect scores too often, but this album is fucking perfect. Quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. Get it.
