Woman You Saw Is The Great City That Rules Over The Kings Of The Earth

Having been around for just under a year since their late spring/early summer formation in 2003, Dayton Ohio's Harlots deliver the kind of "oh shit" musicianship that most bands only dare dream about. Composed of ex members from such diverse bands as Dead To Fall, Eyes Upon Separation and Suffocate Faster, Harlots are light-years ahead of the entire "hardcore" scene with their insane blend of alternately overwhelming and otherworldly chaotic technical maelstrom. Call it "tech metal." Call it "grind." Call it electric funeral dirge. Harlots is a band that takes the melody and beauty from artists like Don Caballero, Mogwai and Sigur Ros, and crushes it to death with the heaviness best compared to the likes of Between The Buried And Me, Botch, Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan. Guitarist Eric Dunn, drummer Jeff Lohrber, vocalist Alex McIntosh and bassist Joel Wright are the only godlike musicians that will ever have the pleasure of possibly releasing the next "We Are The Romans." With their debut Feeling Faint Productions full-length entitled, "The Woman You Saw is the Great City that Rules Over the Kings of the Earth" being released summer 2004, Harlots will be touring extensively throughout all of the great cities of the Earth to support one of the most epic albums ever created.

Harlots is definitely for fans of Into the Moat, The End, and other such grinding technical metal bands. I was hoping that their music was a bit more atmospheric and varied, but the ambience is separated into individual tracks and not incorporated into the "regular" songs. This cd isn't for those trying to relax. Aggression is overflowing. Imagine 5-7 minute grindcore tracks... fast and overwhelming. Their new album is coming out on Lovelost records sometime soon. The tracks I've heard are a vast improvement, in my mind, over this material. Check it out.

If you're into tech-metal along the lines of Ion Dissonance, Into The Moat, From A Second Story Window and the like, then there is no reason you wouldn't like this. Epic-length, tech masterpieces with beautiful melodic passages thrown in from time to time. The quality leaves a bit to be desired at times, but I'll get over it for the sheer fact that they make amazing music. Make sure to see them live as well for it is quite a treat. Look for a new release on Lovelost from them in the not-too-distant future. I expect big things from these guys.

Absolutely amazing album. Combines the best of both worlds musically. Fast and chaotic hardcore with very steady speed for fans of From A Second Story Window, The End, The Secret, and other bands with a sound like this. However Harlots is definitely their own sound. In addition to the hardcore music there are amazing instrumental progressions throughout these songs. Amazing hardcore and amazing instrumental moody soundscapes. Buy this now and you will not be sorry.
