This is my first dive into a Kinsella project, and I am happy to say that it was a great decision. The album starts out great with the song "Little League", with personal favorites "The Sands Have Turned Purple", "Precious", and "Flashpoint: Catheter" rounding out the lineup of the first CD.

The second CD is not as well-put-together as the first, but it still has enough good material on it to keep the CD listenable from start to finish.

If you are a fan of 90's emo, get this CD post-haste. With it's catchy guitar riffs and attention grabbing lyrics, the origin of the Kinsella brothers musical legacy is a must have.

cap'n jazz is not compatible to punk rock. especially not rancid or any street/skate/pop punk. unique emotional music with tim kinsella's unique emotional screaming vocals. puddle splashers, troubled by insects, every single song...unless you watch videos on mtv on a regular basis, and like them, you need this.

This is actually Dave Norman from Guelph/Whitby, Ontario

Wow, I did not get this cd. I can dig Saetia's 'off key' singing, but not this guys'. I'd say save ur money. It's like country tinged - early emo with little replay value. But hey, apparently there's a lot of people who dig this - just not me. P.S. I already sold this cd.

wow. this is a great indie band. lovely! there lyrics are off the wall, yet astounding. and quite the musicians also. they are quite a band. well worth the money.

2/28/2004 by Sam from Beckley, WV Rating:
When I first listened to this CD, almost a year ago, I didn't think it was necessarily great. However, it was compelling enough that I kept listening to it every couple of weeks or so. As I spent more and more time with it, the greatness of it was further revealed. Now, I listen to it at least once a week. Lets break it down.

Lyrically, this is brilliant stuff. Yes, the vocals are sometimes buried and voiced in a way that renders them incomprehensible without the attendant liner notes. However, once you know which words you are looking for, they emerge easily (compared to say, the Locust). Tim Kinsella's sense of wordplay and metaphor blow my mind almost every time.

Musically, this is a visionary work, probably ten years ahead of its time. Think of what the Blood Brothers are doing now, in terms of mixing amazing melodicism and chaotic hardcore. Cap'n Jazz was doing something very similiar on this record, albeit with a different line of influences. The music veers into visceral, borderline-unlistenable noise and then breaks to reveal the melodic heart of the song. The playing isn't as tight as on a lot of other records that venture into this territory, but the sense of exuberance carries the record. Even notes that sound wrong seem somehow charming, like an attempt to capture the joy of youth.

So, I highly recommend this for fans of not only the midwest emo sound, but also for fans of gravity records style artcore. It's not as smooth as the former or as feroicious as the latter, but definetley draws on the better elements of both. There's probably something for you here if you like traditional hardcore and post-rock as well. If your thing is late 90's mall emo/ pop-punk (ala Vagrant and Drive-Thru), there are probably better uses of your money. Maybe the second promise ring record, its got a lot of the same lyrical sensibiltiy while being more listenable. However, if your looking for a musically engaging record that rewards repeated listens, this is what you've been looking for.

Every generation of indie kids has their own musical Holy Grail. Cap'n Jazz, a young, volatile Chicago band that broke up back in '95.

Analphabetapolothology is a document of a band whose unabashed enthusiasm is their greatest charm. Even the title betrays Cap'n Jazz's need to say everything at once; their songs careen at breakneck speeds with ragged guitars falling all over each other in a race to the finish. But it's Tim Kinsella's voice-- a screechy, hoarse thing-- which makes Cap'n Jazz so special. Full out raw emotion from this band.

Buy it and love it.

Don't buy this. It's not good, at all. Seriously, why did I buy this? Why would anyone buy this?

Spend your money on Circle Takes thw Square or Saetia or Racebanon or Orchid or something.

What can i say, this cd is really good.i like the guys voice however it cracks and gets messed up sometimes, but i love it like that. this is a very low price for what your getting. i guess if your into indie stuff i would buy this. also if you get it, listen to both cd's, both are really good and the second one has an acoustic version of "ooh do i love you" which is one of my favorite songs...buy this.

Eh.....Cap'n Jazz is an okay band, but not quite what I expected. The cd is good for the first couple listens, but then it starts to get bland and boring. And some of the songs are just altogether dumb. Almost the whole second disk sucks. However, for the good things about this cd: it's a good cd to put in your player when you need to cheer up, and it's a lot of music for your money. And disk one is fairly good in general. And, yeah...at the very least, even if nothing else really impressed me, Cap's Jazz's cover of Take on Me rocks.

7/22/2003 by Ian from Ewing, NJ Rating:
welp, not too many bad things to say about this cd...actually there are no bad things to say about this cd. unless you consider saying 'this cd is a masterpeice of creative and innovatively driven music that will make you want to say..man i wish i was in that band' something bad to say. if you havent heard of cap'n jazz then buy the cd. if you have heard cap'n jazz and for some reason didnt already, then buy this cd. if youve heard of cap'n jazz but never heard any of their songs then buy this cd. pretty much the main focus of this whole review is that, if your looking at this cd with any slight intent of perhaps purchasing it...purchase it. because its better than not purchasing it and wishing you did. because if you do purchase it and wish that you didnt, you could always give it to your freind Elroy. i heard he likes them.
