The second CD is not as well-put-together as the first, but it still has enough good material on it to keep the CD listenable from start to finish.

If you are a fan of 90's emo, get this CD post-haste. With it's catchy guitar riffs and attention grabbing lyrics, the origin of the Kinsella brothers musical legacy is a must have.

Wow, I did not get this cd. I can dig Saetia's 'off key' singing, but not this guys'. I'd say save ur money. It's like country tinged - early emo with little replay value. But hey, apparently there's a lot of people who dig this - just not me. P.S. I already sold this cd.

Lyrically, this is brilliant stuff. Yes, the vocals are sometimes buried and voiced in a way that renders them incomprehensible without the attendant liner notes. However, once you know which words you are looking for, they emerge easily (compared to say, the Locust). Tim Kinsella's sense of wordplay and metaphor blow my mind almost every time.

Musically, this is a visionary work, probably ten years ahead of its time. Think of what the Blood Brothers are doing now, in terms of mixing amazing melodicism and chaotic hardcore. Cap'n Jazz was doing something very similiar on this record, albeit with a different line of influences. The music veers into visceral, borderline-unlistenable noise and then breaks to reveal the melodic heart of the song. The playing isn't as tight as on a lot of other records that venture into this territory, but the sense of exuberance carries the record. Even notes that sound wrong seem somehow charming, like an attempt to capture the joy of youth.

So, I highly recommend this for fans of not only the midwest emo sound, but also for fans of gravity records style artcore. It's not as smooth as the former or as feroicious as the latter, but definetley draws on the better elements of both. There's probably something for you here if you like traditional hardcore and post-rock as well. If your thing is late 90's mall emo/ pop-punk (ala Vagrant and Drive-Thru), there are probably better uses of your money. Maybe the second promise ring record, its got a lot of the same lyrical sensibiltiy while being more listenable. However, if your looking for a musically engaging record that rewards repeated listens, this is what you've been looking for.

Analphabetapolothology is a document of a band whose unabashed enthusiasm is their greatest charm. Even the title betrays Cap'n Jazz's need to say everything at once; their songs careen at breakneck speeds with ragged guitars falling all over each other in a race to the finish. But it's Tim Kinsella's voice-- a screechy, hoarse thing-- which makes Cap'n Jazz so special. Full out raw emotion from this band.

Buy it and love it.
