| Electric Wizard - Black Masses (Double) |
Electric Wizard are back! Their seventh full-length album for Rise Above Records sees this now legendary band enter into a new era. Still the heaviest band on the planet, this time around there is a stronger emphasis on song structure and musicianship than on previous outings. Black Masses is an encyclopedia referencing the history heavy metal from the Kinks to right through to Bathory, thematically governed by occult knowledge passed down from their ancestors.
A trip through every aspect of everything thats cool about underground drug-rock from the head-spinning Satanic Psychedelia of Patterns of Evil through to the NWOBHM on LSD churning of Turn Off Your Mind, Black Masses is the album Electric Wizard always threatened to make. Its here, and listening to the end of the world was never meant to sound this good!

| I was very reluctant to purchase this lp because it seems as if (judging by the download) they have gone full blown into the cult 70's witchy horror film shit as we heard the beginning of on 'witchcult today'. But, since I caved in and got that one, and was like hell yeah, if there was doubt, the vinyl sound fucking sold me.... here we have again had the same thing occur. The vinyl of these jams sounds great, it's almost like "you get it" as opposed to listening to the digital. The only down side is the total heavy doom shit is almost completely gone, the days of over the top riffs that made you slowly bang your head have been replaced by guitars buried under effects and soundscape, it's not bad by any means, there is still a grand portrait painted, it's just different. PS- witchcult is better, if for 'dunwich' alone. |
