The ’59 Sound could only start out one way: with the sound of a record player needle set down on a scratched-up record. Although New Brunswick, New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem have only technically been a band for two-and-a-half years, in that short amount of time they’ve managed to become one of the punk underground’s most celebrated acts.

Perhaps one of the best CD's from 2008. Gaslights americana style of punk rock sorta changed the way i thought about music. A lot of influence by The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, shines through a lot. Not as good as the first I thought.

This is a great band, one of the better albums I've listened to in the last year. A great addition to any collection

5/6/2009 by Vincent from Quebec, PQ Canada Rating:
This band is a breath of freshness in the industry and they prove it again with this album. I've been listening to it almost everyday since I bought it and I'm not tired yet. One of the greatest album of 2008!

11/1/2008 by Kevin from Houston, TX Rating:
This is the first time I ever heard music from this band. I tend to shy away from newer bands that get alot of attention, because most of the time... those kind of bands suck. But not Gaslight Anthem...they are great and they write amazing songs. Their tunes are full of great stories. So i'm on board with this band and look forward to seeing them play live.

Probably one of the best albums ive ever heard. When i first ordered it i hardly new any Gaslight Anthem, i only new it because my buddy from work always listened to it at work. And when i bought this i was kinda spectacle. Now i realize its so good. The fast passed songs are just amazing, and the slower songs are equally as good, even though they took a while to get in to.

5/5 feeer fucking sure.

9/12/2008 by Johnny from Stevens Point, WI Rating:
Definitely isn't punk, but solid rock 'n roll. Good stuff. Sounds to me like the kinda stuff you'll hear on the radio these days.

9/10/2008 by Judson from Cullman, AL Rating:
Holy crap, these guys are the definition of music. To be honest, its a little softer than Sink or Swim, but its still amazing. This album will make you want to be alive, and NOT in a cheesy poppy way.

9/3/2008 by Trevor from Bloomington, MN Rating:
I checked these guys out because they were comign to the triple rock with the draft and dead to me, and i wanted to see what these guys were like. I heard drive from the amp cd(the one with a song from like 20 bands, most of which are shit) and i really really liked it. I saw that sink or swim was on here, and i bought it. It was fucking amazing. i thought to myself that it was going to be hard to do better than that on their ep, but i was blown away by that, too. i really liked blue jean,s and i liked the direction they were headed. Fast forward about a year, The 59 Sound comes out, and of course i had to preorder it. And i'm fucking glad. I love every song on this cd already, and i've only had it a few weeks. I can't tell if it's better than sink or not, but i don't care. i love it. When i listen to great expectations, immediatly i get a euphoric feeling. And it goes all the way through til Here's looking at ya kid, and thats because its slower, and my least favorite song, but its not even a bad song. But if you've heard gaslight before, you should be impressed by how much their songwriting has improved(they were good songwriters in the first place!!) This is my favorite band.

8/31/2008 by David from Hagersten, Sweden Rating:
I love Gaslight Anthem. Just like their previous releases this album is great. My only problem is that they seem to have a hard time coming up with new melodies. A lot of the songs on "The '59 Sound" can be found on "Sink Or Swim" and "Senor And The Queen". Well, parts of them anyway...

Listen to "Meet Me By the River's Edge". The melody when they're singing "no surrender my Bobby Jean" sounds a little bit too much like the one on "Drive" when they're singing "go to sleep my brothers I...". There are other examples too, one being "Great Expectations" and "Wooderson". "I saw daylights last night in a dream about my first wife" sounds like "dancing my moonlight, my old friend the twilight". Many of the other songs sound familiar too.

Part from that, this album is really good. I'm not sure which songs are my favorites. But "Casanova, Baby!", "Film Noir", "Here's Looking At You Kid", "Great Expectations" and "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" seems to be spinning most at the moment.

A little slower and a little less aggressive but a worthy follow-up to "Sink Or Swim"

8/19/2008 by Paul from St. Louis, MO Rating:
Worth all the hype. A classic album. The only song I don't like is "Even Cowgirls get the Blues". A little slower paced than Sink Or Swim but great song writing. The album feels familiar like a rock 'n roll album that has been around forever but it never seems like a rehash or corny nostalgia. Awesome.
