Death & Taxes - Tattooed Hearts & Broken Promises
Tattooed Hearts & Broken Promises is the result of many years spent on the road, in the studio and onstage. The sound and production value of the recording are world class. Post-punk audiences
gravitate to the stories told in Morris’s songs, from friends lost to drug overdose to teenage suicide and even the murder of a close friend. The truth and honesty in the lyrics shine through on every track and is propelled by the high level of musicianship throughout. Musically these songs appeal to rockers, twangers and punkers alike with Morris slinging his signature Gretsch hollowbody guitar, belting out lyrics that every listener can identify with alongside Savitkas on his scruffy old Fender Precision Bass and Toland on his vintage Ludwig drums.

As far as sheer musicianship goes, this cd is can't be touched. I can't say enough about the individual guitar, bass, and drum playing as well as how all instruments fit together. The production/recording quality is also superb; this is not a bunch of kids screwing around to put out a record. There is a wide musical variety which breaks up the album pretty well. You get a good sense of musical influences on this record. I can detect country, rockabilly, punk, and traditional rock and roll inflections in most songs. The songs are written with a fairly traditional pop song structure--verse, chorus, verse, so there isn't a lot of variety to the song/lyric writing.

All I can say is that I was very excited about this CD. Being written by an ex-Bruiser and all the hype that Mark Lind was giving it It was sure to be a great CD.... Then I put it in my CD player and it just fell flat for me. The song writing is OK, the melodys are oversued, and the vocals are lacking... I suppose overall its an OK CD, but there was nothing that really grabbed me with it.
