Good-intentioned philosophers may try to boil life down to one universal truth or “secret,” but they’re missing the point. Ultimately, life is composed of so many experiences, emotions and relationships that it’s impossible to break it down like a chemical compound. Chuck Ragan has always understood that dichotomy, whether he was screaming over buzzing guitars in Hot Water Music or pouring his heart out over a bed of acoustic instrumentation as he does these days. Ultimately, the one constant in Ragan’s music is the way it personifies life’s beauty and struggles with equal aplomb.

Recorded on February 19, 2007 in Los Feliz, California, Los Feliz captures a very spontaneous performance of songs in a setting that isn’t contrived or overly scrutinized. “We set up the show and played it a week later,” Ragan explains about the impromptu performance, which spans everything from traditional songs to a HWM track to previously unreleased solo material and even a few covers. “A lot of good friends came out and played and a lot of people showed up and showed their support,” he continues, “it was nothing but good fun.”

A great introduction to Chuck Ragan's solo material and a live album that seems to capture the atmosphere at the gig very well too. Well worth buying even if you have feast or famine as around 50% of the cd is not featured there.

Well worth buying.

Not often do Artists start by putting out a Live cd. That dont matter because this is an amazing live cd. I would have to say its the only live cd I really really enjoy listening to. He has a bunch of amazing new songs on here and a few covers. It is so freakin sweet when someone from one of your favorite bands goes back to the roots with folk music. Folk is amazing, and chuck really pulls it off. Most people who say they are doing folk are really just making acoustic rock. He really pulls it off on this live cd and his new studio album, which is freaking amazing as well. I would have to say the highlights of this cd are "Do you pray" "open up and wail" and "dream of a miners child". The cover of the traditional folk song really makes this live cd great, along with the bob dylan cover "fixin' to die". Just a really good live cd. Good sound, good songs, Good chuck!

I am a huge Hot Water Music and Chuck Ragan fan. As much as it brings a tear to my eye that the chances of hearing a new HWM album is almost zero, al least we still have Chuck. Chuck's solo material does not disapoint, still as edgy as ever and written straight from the heart. Its toe tappingly catchy but as with most live albums (i find!) it lacks a certain sound. As amazing as it would be to watching from the audience. On cd it just does not have the same affect. This one is for die hard fans only!

Ever since Hot Water Music did the split with Alkaline Trio, I always thought it would be awesome if Chuck Ragan did his own solo acqoustic album...and wolla here it is! Of course you get some cover songs...including a Hot Water Music song. This is a live album too, by the way. Not a studio album. This is a great release. I can't wait until it comes out on vinyl too!

I was a bit worried about this cd because for the most part i'm not a fan of strictly acoustic music but there are people who can pull it off and Chuck is one of them. Like the guy below said, don't get it if you're expecting HWM. However the raw intesity of his guitar playing and singing alike make it so that same vibe you get when listening to Hot Water Music is still there. He has one of the most distinct/awesome voices in music. I think that this cd wouldn't be near as good if it were a studio cd but it has that raw live essence. A good choice for and music fan really.

If you are a fan of hot water music AT ALL, you really need to own this cd. I was pretty skeptical about chuck releasing a solo cd...but that was abandoned as soon as I heard the chorus on the first song. Seriously, if you are on the fence about purchasing this cd, just buy it. It's worth every penny.

Hell yeah. This album captures the intensity and passion of Chuck Ragan. "The Boat" is my favorite track. The CD might be too folksy for some, especially if you're expecting this to sound like Hot Water Music (it doesn't), but I dig it. Keep it coming, Chuck! Thanks for the poster, by the way.
