At the center of the 1997’s debut, A Better View of the Rising Moon, is the continued search for the band’s creative vision as artists and friends. Each member of 1997 comes from diverse backgrounds, yet by meshing all of their styles and influences into a musical melting pot, the band has created a sound and style that is startlingly fresh and distinctive. The male and female harmonies summon elements of contemporary emo, lovelorn pop, groove, and acoustic folk sing-along. The final product defies easy categorization and serves as a refreshing aural canvas for the talents of five unique people with something to say to the world. As the title of the record (taken from a haiku which reads: “Since my house burnt down, I now own a better view of the rising moon”) suggests, 1997 is concerned with sorting through needless worry and distraction to discover essential truths in life, and finding positive linings in all of life’s dark grey clouds.

1997’s debut album “…A Better View Of The Rising Moon” scores high marks in my book. With Lyrics like, “Turn the lights off. I don’t want to see myself doing this” as found in the song “Garden Of Evil” or from the song “Hey Darlin” , “Casting shadows on the pavement, dancing toe to toe” keeps one tapping their foot and enjoying the music.

With a splash of Mandolin, Banjo, Harmonica and even Cello, an extra unique flavor, which sets the band well apart and above the typical carbon-copy emo-type sound. 1997 does not yield to, or continue down the easier, past, path placed on today’s stages from other bands - 1997 has found their own path and forge ahead without screaming or cursing or songs without substance.

From “Waters Edge” to “Curse Or Cure” - the entire CD is a treat to hear and enjoy, over and over!

P.S. I’ve bought 3, 1997 cd’s so far, one for each car, and one for the house! Bottomline, GREAT CD, buy it!
