Destroy The Runner - Saints

Destroy the Runner rise from the ashes of the San Diego hardcore scene (having birthed scene notables such as Atreyu, As I Lay Dying and Eighteen Visions). Combining an onslaught of hair-whipping, metal-shredding guitar riffs with bold and yet incredibly heart-felt melodies, Destroy the Runner brings a breath of fresh air to every metalcore head banger out there. They will not disappoint.

Hey. I've had this album since about the time I, Lucifer came out, but on iTunes up until now. The sound quality of that service just doesn't compare with the real thing.

This is Destroy The Runner's first full-length album (and also first release as Destroy The Runner), and my basic description of it would be: Metalcore. Nailed. There is nothing experimental or technically new on this album, but it features amazing riffs and solid work from all members. I really struggle to find music that can beat Destroy The Runner.

The vocals by Kyle Setter (compare with Chad Ackerman) are a different breed compared to DTR's later album, with a more conventional tone to them, particularly with the screamed parts of the vocals. They work. No complaints.

This is a Christian band, but this album could easily have fooled me, save for the thanks to God in the album's sleeve booklet (and Wikipedia). The name, Saints, for the album, is not unusual because many bands choose to include references to religion, particularly in the satanic/darker elements of it, and thus, it is quite neutral.

The themes of this album are deep and not readily apparent. For example, the song There Can Be No Hesitation is reminiscent of the attitudes found in Logan's Run, the book and movie which the band takes their name from. The album seems to reference death and emotions which persist even after the death of those which they were felt for. Lyrically it is quite an austere, dark album, and the cover is very indicative of this.

This is one of my favourite albums of all time. Five stars.

I heard Saints on Headbangers Ball and I decided to get the CD based on the clean melodic vocal parts. Dont be fooled by that song....Its the only one to really have the sung verses like that. The rest of the CD is a mediocre As I Lay Dying clone. Im not saying its bad but its way too similar to As I Lay Dying. Your best bet is just download Saints and buy anything by As I Lay Dying. I will say though.....Saints is one of my favorite songs of 2007
