Franz Nicolay is that dapper, mustachioed multi-instrumentalist and man-about-town you’ve seen with such groups as The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society. On Major General, he steps up to the spotlight with a melodramatic grab-bag of full-throated songs, stories, and days of wine & roses; shamelessly strident, stentorian and more than a little sentimental. Major General is rich with tales of punk-rock disillusionment, redemption, nostalgic regret, ruthless self-interrogations & reinvention, and defiant yet affectionate apologies. It’s a new look for the stylishly vaudevillian jack-of-all-trades with the Jimmy Durante and death’s-head-accordion tattoos. A new stop on a hobo’s-trail of intelligent, incisive hedonism that’s taken him through anarcho-circus punk, Balkan-gypsy, new chamber music, and anthemic classic rock.

I took a chance on this and it payed off! This guy is sooo diverse musically! He manages to cover many corners of the evolving punk rock sound. I'm not sure what kind of written description would do him justice? I popped in the CD and instantly the song "Jeff Penalty" (about former Dead Kennedy's front man) comes on and it is like a jolting punk song...and then later on a softer tune about Franz's father (I think?). So what I am trying to say...is that if you want to buy something that is not so predictable ...then get this!

Do you have money? Does it matter? This is the album you should be buying. This album is a mixture of slow and fast songs, but all great. One tip about who should buy this album (in the form of an anecdote): Rolling Stone's website premiered World Inferno vs. the End of the Evening as a song by The Hold Steady's Franz Nicolay and about one or two people who commented really didn't like it. That is a result of that this album doesn't sound very much like the Hold Steady at all. Buy this album because you like the World/Inferno although it doesn't sound exactly like that either. However, there are 2 songs written by Jack Terricloth on the album (both slow songs). Anyway, if you are at all open to hearing something that isn't straight forward punk, buy this album. It is great.
